Connilyn Cossette’s writing soars in the third installment of The King’s Men series. With a riveting storyline, great character development, moving spiritual elements, and fascinating historical detail, Splendor of the Land brings the Bible to life in an inspiring, transformative tale of valor.
Synopsis:
Gavriel, a soldier in the elite company of Yonatan–son of King Saul–dreams of forging his destiny through crafting weapons with his own hands. Despite earning his place among Israel’s finest, he is haunted by a dark past that no distraction can dispel. When his reckless behavior forces Yonatan to present him with an ultimatum, Gavriel is sent on a mission to persuade a distant tribe to sever their ties with the Amalekites.
Zahava, a gifted goldsmith hidden behind her father’s legacy, lives in the shadows due to her physical affliction. Her talent, unmatched and unrecognized, is a closely guarded secret within her family. Disheartened by a love that seems unattainable, she resigns herself to a life of obscurity. However, when Gavriel arrives in her village, they’re tangled together in a way no one could have imagined. As they navigate through unforeseen dangers and enemy threats, Gavriel must confront his past and either bend his knee to the One True King or lose his love forever.
I really enjoyed getting to know Gavi and watching him evolve throughout this novel. After catching glimpses of him in the previous books, it was fun to take this journey with him and see what Adonai had in store for his life. Zahava was also a great protagonist — gracious, patient, and fearless. Together, they were the perfect match, though their union was far from ordinary.
In most of today’s romance novels, we see an endless stream of lust, games, and toxicity that leave us wondering what true love looks like. Connilyn does a beautiful job developing Gavi and Zahava’s love story. The way their admiration grew into pure love was both inspiring and moving. They modeled Christ-like love, selflessly sacrificing for one another and putting the other’s needs ahead of their own.
“Compassion cannot come at the expense of obedience.” ~ Connilyn Cossette
As much as I enjoyed the characters, writing, and plot of Splendor of the Land, I found myself struggling to get through sections of the book because the subject matter hit too close to home. We read about Israel’s enemies committing atrocities throughout the Bible, but until October 7th, I used to read these accounts as distant, historical events. After living through the Black Sabbath and witnessing the turmoil of my people over the past two and a half years, however, themes of kidnapping and pillaging feel deeply personal and bring up a range of emotions. There was a moment where I had to pause reading and set the book down for a time because it became overwhelming. I am glad I returned to finish the story, though, because the ending was very rewarding and sets up book four beautifully. I’m excited to see where Connilyn takes this series and how the Lord will move in the lives of the other characters, though I may wait to return to it when the wounds aren’t so raw.
“Except, of course, the Philistines and Amalek. Both want the land. They will not stop until every last Hebrew is in the ground. We have to protect our people, or there won’t be any of us left.” ~ Connilyn Cossette
The King’s Men series is a fantastic look into the early reign of King Saul and his military campaigns. I highly recommend it to readers of biblical fiction. Connilyn Cossette has a remarkable talent for bringing the Old Testament to life.
I look forward to each new release and supporting her future work. If you haven’t read her books before, I highly encourage you to check them out — they’re amazing!
