Adventures in Thailand: A Friendship Forged Through Cyberspace

Going on vacation while your country is at war evokes a whirlwind of emotions. There’s guilt for leaving, relief for the coming break, and anxiety for the possibility that you can’t return. However, despite the unpredictable situation, nothing would prevent me from boarding my flight to Thailand. This day had been a long time coming (cue Taylor Swift), and I was prepared to dodge as many missiles as it took to reach my destination.

While many dream of visiting Thailand for its breathtaking landscapes, delicious cuisine, and vibrant culture, my motivation stemmed from something deeper — a friendship forged through cyberspace. Five years ago, I “met” Soleil on Connilyn Cossette’s Facebook launch team, and over time, our conversations evolved into a sisterhood. Despite never meeting in person, Soleil became my closest friend, and last year, we vowed to finally meet in person, choosing Thailand because it was halfway between our locations — me in Israel and her in South Korea.

As we planned our ten-day adventure, our initially ambitious itinerary transformed into a more relaxed schedule, allowing ample time for exploration and rejuvenation. Our journey began in Chiang Mai, nestled in Thailand’s picturesque mountains, before culminating in the bustling streets of Bangkok. It was an adventure brimming with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories.

Packing for Thailand

Preparing to visit a new country involves a delicate dance between preparedness and adaptability. I always look at visiting a new place like a game of Russian Roulette, because you can plan according to research and weather predictions, but once you’re there, anything can happen. You’ll either be prepared or caught unawares — which is why I’m not a light packer. No matter how many travel reels I watch or blogs I read, there’s always something not on the list that I’m glad I brought/learned. Here are four essentials I needed during my adventure in Thailand:

  1. Pack for All Weather — From the draining heat to the chilly air-conditioned buildings, versatility is key. I’m so glad I brought my winter pajamas and jeans!! Additionally, don’t forget to pack a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent (Doterra’s TerraShield is excellent!), a portable charger (UNDER 32,000mAh!!), and camping soap and toilet paper (you’ll thank me later).
  2. Cash is a MUST — Thailand is a predominately cash-based economy, so make sure you have enough cash for your trip. Each ATM withdrawal costs 220 baht, so take out a large sum at the beginning of your trip — approx 4,000 baht for ten days.
  3. Get an eSIM or international data package — While some of us want to unplug on vacation, Soleil and I used the Grab app every day, which relieved a lot of stress as we ordered taxis at set prices (critical in the city), got takeout on our lazy nights in, and bought groceries when we got sick!
  4. Learn Basic Thai Phrases — Though many people know basic English, familiarizing yourself with several Thai phrases creates a great connection and appreciation with the locals. Important words to know include — Thank You – Khob Khun [Kup (male)/Ka (female)]; Hello – Sawatdee [krub/kah]; Yes – Chai; No – Mai Chai

Making New Friends

I love meeting people on my trips and then bumping into them in random places. It makes the world feel smaller and reminds me I’m never alone. After racing through the Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok to check my bags into my next flight, I met my row mates from my first flight at my new gate, and we compared our travel plans as we waited to board. Then, on the short flight to Chiang Mai, I sat beside a couple from New York and spoke to them about their trip through Asia and my upcoming first meeting with Soleil. A few days later, we passed them on the street, and they were thrilled to meet Soleil after hearing our story.

United at Last!

Arriving in Chiang Mai, my stomach fluttered excitedly as I collected my bag and speed walked towards international arrivals. Soleil and I had landed a few minutes apart, but she still had to go through immigration, so thinking I had time, I settled in a seat close to the door and almost missed her entrance! She came over so quietly, but as soon as I spotted her, I jumped out of my chair and rushed towards her. She was real!! As we hugged, laughed, and poked each other to confirm we weren’t dreaming, my uncertainties faded into the background as we quickly fell into a familiar rhythm.

Relaxing at Our Hotel

Exhausted from our long flights, we arrived at our hotel and were grateful for its tranquil setting. The Amata Lanna Chiang Mai reminded me of a hidden oasis. Within walking distance of downtown and the night markets, the hotel was off a busy road but felt secluded with its bricked wall and many plants. When we arrived, the desk clerk gave us a warm welcome and refreshing juice before showing us around the property. Our room was on the ground floor, near the lovely (but freezing) pool. It was spacious, equipped with a jacuzzi bath, and decorated with traditional northern Thai styles. We loved its character and appreciated the effort to make the hotel feel like a resort, not your usual characterless hotel. The staff was terrific, the 24/7 complimentary hot drinks were taken advantage of, and the breakfast was mouth-watering — I miss my Thai porridge and purple sticky rice with coconut flakes.

As the sun set on our first day in Thailand, Soleil and I ordered takeout and savored our first taste of Thai cuisine. If you plan to visit northern Thailand, I highly recommend chicken khao soi! It was our favorite dish of the trip!

With enough books to occupy our downtime (Soleil brought me SIX large hardcovers, while I brought her four paperbacks), we spent the next day recuperating from our flights before walking to Nong Buak Haad Park for the opening night of Chiang Mai’s annual flower festival.
