Across the Ages, the fourth installment in the Timeless series, was a beautifully immersive read. Gabrielle Meyer’s meticulous research once again shone, making it effortless to slip between time periods and grasp the nuances of each culture.
I will admit, the expanding family tree is becoming harder to track, and I occasionally find myself searching for connections between names and stories. Even so, Caroline’s journey stood out clearly, offering a fresh and compelling perspective on time crossing.
Synopsis
One woman. Two separate lifetimes. A life-altering decision that could reshape her destiny.
Caroline holds a deep secret. Living in 1727 and 1927 simultaneously, each night she goes to sleep in one life and wakes up in the other. In search of answers to her unique existence, Caroline stumbles upon a letter from her mother hinting at her own experiences as a time-crosser, sending Caroline on a daring quest to uncover the truth. In 1727, Caroline disguises herself as a cabin boy and joins a ship sailing for the Bahamas, her mother’s last known location, where she crosses paths with a ruthless but handsome pirate and is caught in a web of secrets, deception, and unexpected alliances.
In 1927 St. Paul, Minnesota, Caroline grapples with her other life as the daughter of a renowned preacher. Her two older brothers have fallen prey to the corruption rampant during Prohibition, and Caroline struggles to keep their involvement hidden to save her father’s career. As her search for answers about her time-crossing leads her to the dangerous yet exciting world of speakeasies, Caroline enlists the help of a childhood friend who is now a police officer. But with her family’s future at risk and their loyalties tested, Caroline faces a life-altering decision that could reshape her destiny.
Across the Ages felt different from its predecessors. While the question of which time period to choose has always carried a bittersweet weight, Caroline’s path felt quietly certain from the beginning. Rather than centering on that decision, however, the story unfolds through her search for truth — about her origins and the nature of her gift. Without the looming countdown to her twenty-first birthday, the narrative felt as if it breathed more freely, allowing Caroline’s experiences to unfold organically. Watching each piece fall into place — and witnessing Caroline’s growth across both timelines — was deeply satisfying.
There is a quiet resonance to this story. Life is not without hardship, but we are all given the choice over how we walk through it. Caroline’s ancestors might have set the path for her, yet she was the only one who could decide whether to follow in their footsteps or forge something new. Even in the moments where God felt distant, His presence is never absent. By the end of Caroline’s story, His hand is unmistakably woven through every thread of her journey.
Gabrielle Meyer continues to impress me. Her storytelling drew me in completely, and discovering a new era through her lens felt enriching and engaging. I especially admire how she refuses to repeat herself — giving each book in the Timeless series a unique spin on history and time-crossing (it never gets boring). I hope she continues to take creative risks and expand this world for years to come. These stories are a gift to readers who love history, romance, and a biblical reminder that God has not abandoned us.
