“If we want to help people, we must enter into their lives, be a part of their community. That’s where real change happens. Person to person. Day by day. When we live life together.”~ Rachel Linden
Most of us strive to leave an imprint that will remain long after we’ve left this earth, but that doesn’t mean we’re all meant to do “big” things. In her jet-setting novel, The Enlightenment of Bees, Rachel Linden explores the timeless question of purpose as her protagonist, Mia West, travels the globe searching for an answer.
Sometimes a shattered heart leads to a fantastic journey.
At twenty-six, apprentice baker Mia West has her entire life planned out: a Craftsman cottage in Seattle, a job baking at The Butter Emporium, and her first love—her boyfriend, Ethan—by her side. But when Ethan declares he “needs some space,” Mia’s carefully planned future crumbles.
Adrift and unsure of her future, Mia joins her vivacious housemate Rosie on a humanitarian trip around the world funded by a reclusive billionaire. Along with a famous grunge rock star, a Rwandan immigrant, and an unsettlingly attractive Hawaiian urban farmer, Mia and Rosie embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
From the slums of Mumbai to a Hungarian border camp during the refugee crisis, Mia’s heart is challenged and changed in astonishing ways—ways she could never have imagined if she hadn’t opened herself up to the opportunity. As she grapples with how to make a difference in a complicated world, Mia’s journey through self-discovery leaves her with the choice between the past she left behind and a new budding dream in her heart.
“I swallow hard but don’t say anything further. In some way, I feel like my heart is newly broken, but at the same time it is liberated too. Like a butterfly from a cocoon, a chick from an egg, my heart had to be cracked open to be set free.” ~ Rachel Linden
Excuse me while I wipe the tears from my eyes! The Enlightenment of Bees was a delightful journey with crazy adventures, heartfelt moments, a great message, and incredible writing. A coming-of-age story with a conflict all of us go through, Mia was a pleasure to get to know throughout the pages of this novel. I especially loved how the author highlighted the importance of not being afraid to pursue what you’re most passionate about and the dangers of telling people they should shoot for more realistic goals. I’ve seen too many people give up on their passions after believing the lie that the chances of their dreams coming true are one in a million. Even if the statistics are correct, isn’t the fight worth it? Wouldn’t you prefer spending your life doing what you love, defying the odds, glorifying God, and sharing your gifts with the world? I know I would!
“Remember Mia, your place in this world is the space where your greatest passion meets the world’s great pain. Go now and find that place.”~ Rachel Linden
The Enlightenment of Bees is a contemporary romance novel suitable for all audiences. Though it is classed as Christian fiction, there with no specific religious belief or message; nevertheless, this is a fabulous, clean novel worth reading or listening to!
