After collecting dust on my shelf for almost a decade, I thought it was high time I gave Lisa T. Bergren’s Remnants series a whirl—and I’m so glad I did! Though I’m not the series’ target audience (it’s a teen sci-fi), I thoroughly enjoyed the opening of this epic trilogy. The storyline was action-packed, mysterious, and suspenseful, while the characters were complex, real, and deeply human. Despite being the “chosen ones,” or Ailith, their humanity remained intact—a refreshing contrast to much of today’s fantasy and sci-fi, where protagonists often don’t hesitate to kill their enemies or anyone who gets in their way. In Season of Wonder, however, the Remnants are full of compassion and heart, willingly risking themselves to preserve others.
Of course, there are also conflicts of the heart that each character must wrestle with throughout the storyline, especially Andriana. I loved the slow-burn romance and found myself on the edge of my seat as the Remnants answered the Maker’s call.
Synopsis
Our coming was foretold by the elders— Those who would change the future, just as the planet teetered on the edge of darkness.
Born on the prophesied day with birthmarks in the form of a crescent moon, they knew us immediately. Swaddled and screaming, we were spirited away by those who hid us, trained us, and kept us safe until our time came.
They poured their lives into us. Some died to save us.
And now we, the Remnants, protected by Knights of the Last Order, have gathered.
Called until we breathe our last … to save the world.
“Power begets power. But most people think the greater the power, the surer the foothold. It’s not like that. Think of a mountain peak. The greater the power, the more narrow the foothold, and therefore the more likely we are to top either way on its precipice.” ~ Lisa T Bergren
Lisa T. Bergren’s River of Time series was my introduction to Christian fiction when I was a teen, and her storytelling has once again hooked me. Her world-building is vivid and immersive, while each character has a distinct personality, with several truly standing out—Andriana, Ronan, Vidar, and Raniero. I’m excited to read what happens next, as there is still so much to uncover and understand.
Finally, I want to commend Lisa for the way she integrated biblical themes throughout this book. They are clear without being heavy-handed or overly corny. In fact, I think this series is a wonderful way to sow seeds into the hearts of teens who may have heard about God but never fully understood that He has chosen us, calling us to embody His character and bring glory to His name. I truly hope this book sparks a deeper desire to learn more about who our God is and what He has called us to do.
Right, time to start book two… I need to know what happens!!
