The Mountain Between Us

“The mountain between us is one I cannot climb.” ~ Charles Martin

The Mountain Between Us was one of my favorite movies of 2017. After learning that it was based on a novel by the same title, I knew I needed to read it; however, I was nervous that watching the movie beforehand would ruin the enjoyment of listening to the book. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. Each were unmistakably different, almost entirely new stories, but equally amazing and containing the same essence and message in both narratives. I love them both for various reasons, but since this is supposed to be a book review, I will only focus on the exceptional novel.

Spectacular, intense, and original, The Mountain Between Us is a survival book that makes you feel like you’re fighting for your life alongside the protagonists, Ashley and Ben, in the frigid temperatures and harsh conditions. After all the flights are canceled at the Salt Lake City airport, Ashely and Ben will do anything to get to their destinations on time. Fighting to make it to her wedding, Ashley hastily accepts Ben’s offer to join him on a charter plane to Denver, Colorado. However, things go horribly wrong for the two strangers when their pilot suffers from a heart attack whilst thousands of feet in the air! As a result, their plane crashes into the remote High Uintas Wilderness, where they have to do whatever they can to survive.

The aftermath of the crash: Their pilot – dead. Ashely – one fractured leg. Ben – a couple of broken ribs. And the pilot’s dog – happy to be on the ground. With no one knowing where they are, Ashley and Ben have to lean on each other to make it out of this situation alive. But, how will they survive with their injuries and few supplies? Will their medicine and journalism skills help get them to safety, or will the harsh climate prove to be unbeatable?

The Mountain Between Us was an epic journey I fell in love with. The writing was excellent; the plot, perfect; and the climax, thrilling and captivating! I loved everything about this book and was so pleased the movie didn’t ruin the novel for me. The Mountain Between Us is definitely a new favorite of mine!
