Before We Were Yours

“But the love of sisters needs no words. It does not depend on memories, or mementos, or proof. It runs as deep as a heartbeat. It is as ever present as a pulse.” ~ Lisa Wingate

From the moment I started this book, I knew that I had come across an unforgettable story. Before We Were Yours takes an incredible journey through time to uncover a secret that will change the way a family looks at their heritage forever.

The year is 1939, Rill Foss and her four younger siblings were happy and had loving parents until they were snatched off their shanty boat while their mother was at the hospital giving birth to their newest siblings. With no one to save them, Rill and her siblings are taken to the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, run by the notorious Georgia Tann. There, the Foss kids will face challenges no child should ever have to experience.

Meanwhile, in the present day, a young woman named Avery has just met an elderly woman who sparks questions Avery never thought she’d have to ask. Unable to let go of these thoughts, Avery plunges into her family’s history to expose a secret no one knew was there until now.

Before We Were Yours was an absolutely stunning novel! The way Lisa Wingate, the author, recounted the story is something to be admired. I never knew what the next revelation would be or what awaited the characters in the coming chapters. It progressed beautifully and left me on my toes the entire way through.

The fact that this novel was based on true events made the storyline even more tragic and real. This book was full of mystery, suspense, love, loss, heartbreak, revelations, and so much more! I don’t think I can put into words the actual incredibility of this book or comprehend what these children had to go through at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society during the 1920s-50s; you’ll have to read it and come to your own conclusion. Life is precious, and it’s a tale like this that makes me very thankful for the life I live.
